Robin Shapiro, LISW is an author, psychotherapist and an EMDRIA-approved consultant, offering consultation to psychotherapists on the gamut of psychotherapy issues including trauma, attachment, endogenous disorders, and countertransference issues. Author of three books, EMDR Solutions I, EMDR Solutions II and The Trauma Treatment Handbook. Leader of EMDR-related workshops including the Two-Hand Interweave, EMDR with Cultural and Generational Issues, Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorders, Medical Issues, Anxiety Disorders, Couples, Complex Trauma and Dissociation. She has presented these workshops at regional and international EMDR International Association conferences and, for many years in, in the Part Two of an EMDR Weekly Class.
Bessel van der Kolk MD has spent his career studying how children and adults adapt to traumatic experiences, and has translated emerging findings from neuroscience and attachment research to develop and study a range of potentially effective treatments for traumatic stress in children and adults.
In 1984, he set up one of the first clinical/research centers in the US dedicated to study and treatment of traumatic stress in civilian populations, which has trained numerous researchers and clinicians specializing in the study and treatment of traumatic stress, and which has been continually funded to research the impact of traumatic stress and effective treatment interventions. He did the first studies on the effects of SSRIs on PTSD; was a member of the first neuroimaging team to investigate how trauma changes brain processes, and did the first research linking BPD and deliberate self-injury to trauma and neglect in early childhood.
Much of his research has focused on how trauma has a different impact at different stages of development, and that disruptions in care-giving systems have additional deleterious effects that need to be addressed for effective intervention. In order to promote a deeper understanding of the impact of childhood trauma and to foster the development and execution of effective treatment interventions, he initiated the process that led to the establishment of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN), a Congressionally mandated initiative that now funds approximately 150 centers specializing in developing effective treatment interventions, and implementing them in a wide array of settings, from juvenile detention centers to tribal agencies, nationwide.
He has focused on studying treatments that stabilize physiology, increase executive functioning and help traumatized individuals to feel fully alert to the present. This has included an NIMH funded study on EMDR and NCCAM funded study of yoga, and, in recent years, the study of neurofeedback to investigate whether attentional and perceptual systems (and the neural tracks responsible for them) can be altered by changing EEG patterns.
His efforts resulted in the establishment of Trauma Center, that consist of a well-trained clinical team specializing in the treatment of children and adults with histories of child maltreatment, that applies treatment models that are widely taught and implemented nationwide, a research lab that studies the effects of neurofeedback and MDMA on behavior, mood, and executive functioning, and numerous trainings nationwide to a variety of mental health professional, educators, parent groups, policy makers, and law enforcement personnel.

Elspeth works in private practice with a wide variety of clients in Edinburgh and online, and assists at Somatic Experiencing trainings in London, Edinburgh, and Bangalore in India. She is a member of BACP, Trauma Training in Scotland, SETI/FHE, and Co-Chair of SEA UK. Having worked for years with university students, witnessing the struggle some of them had with anxiety, with relationships, with family dif?culties and with addictions and self-harm, she trained in psychotherapy at the University of Edinburgh. In 2003, she moved to Lagos, Nigeria, for 5 years and worked there in trauma recovery counselling, and in HIV/AIDS training and counselling, for large oil companies and in the healthcare sector. She found that while psychotherapy/counselling was helpful, it was not enough to combat ?ashbacks and other symptoms of trauma. In Somatic Experiencing she found something more effective. She attended a workshop by Peter Levine in 2010, and later completed the SE Practitioner training in London run by SOS Internationale (http:// www.sosinternationale.org). Elspeth integrates a variety of trainings with a long-standing interest in the inclusivity of Franciscan spirituality, valuing and being present to all living things, and including the body in an understanding of psychological and emotional healing. She continues to pursue an interest in how neurophysiology informs our healing and recovery from trauma. Her belief for clients is one of hope in their ability to ?nd an experience of ‘good’, to develop their capacity for aliveness, greater freedom, increased calm, comfort, hope, playfulness and enjoyment of life. In SE, we don’t ‘?x’ or ‘treat’ clients: we listen, attend, and follow, making space for the body to complete natural survival defenses, to reconnect with others, and return to natural ?exibility. Elspeth has attended workshops and trainings given by Daniel Siegel, Stephen Porges, Kathy Kain, Bessel van der Kolk, and several of the other speakers at the summit, and continues to ?nd their trainings and books hugely helpful in her work!

Richard Schwartz, PhD, began his career as a family therapist and an academic at the University of Illinois at Chicago. There he discovered that family therapy alone did not achieve full symptom relief, and in asking patients why, he learned that they were plagued by what they called "parts." These patients became his teachers as they described how their parts formed networks of inner relationship that resembled the families he had been working with. He also found that as they focused on and, thereby, separated from their parts, they would shift into a state characterized by qualities like curiosity, calm, confidence and compassion. He called that inner essence the Self and was amazed to find it even in severely diagnosed and traumatized patients. From these explorations, the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model was born in the early 1980s.
IFS is now evidence-based and has become a widely-used form of psychotherapy, particularly with trauma. It provides a non-pathologizing, optimistic, and empowering perspective and a practical and effective set of techniques for working with individuals, couples, families, and more recently, corporations and classrooms.
In 2013, Schwartz left the Chicago area and now lives in Brookline, MA where he is on the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Dr Michael Duffy’s research looks at mental health linked to trauma and conflict and the development of evidence based psychological interventions, in particular cognitive therapy for conflict related PTSD. In 1998 after the Omagh bombing Michael was invited with Dr Kate Gillespie to co-lead the work of the H&SC Trauma & Recovery team. In collaboration with Profs David M Clark and Anke Ehlers, Oxford university and KCL, they led and evaluated the application of a new cognitive model for PTSD with victims of this traumatic event. Since then Michael systematically explored the phenomenology of PTSD linked to civil conflict and researched the effectiveness of Trauma Focused cognitive behavioural psychotherapy (TFCBT) with other conflict related traumas via single case studies, a case series and clinical trials. Michael has been invited to present many TFCBT workshops for clinicians working with survivors after tragedies such as: the 9/11 Twin Towers attack New York (2004); 7/11 bombings London (2005); Oslo bombing and Utoya Island shootings in Norway (2012). In June 2017 Michael delivered "the psychological care of victims of terrorism" at Complutense University Madrid. In addition Dr Duffy has been an advisor to the Manchester Mental Health Senior staff on responses for victims of the terrorist attack at the Manchester concert hall on 22 May 17 delivered a keynote on "evidence based responses for PTSD" for 150 therapists working with victims of this tragedy.
