Faced with clients disclosing any addictive behaviours-substances, eating, gambling or sex/love preoccupations-conventional wisdom is limited: refer to a specialist or send to a programme. Therapists feel ineffective, clients feel stigmatized or fearful of taking ‘next steps’ and tragically, underlying trauma remains unrecognised. Utilizing the IFS model offers a paradigm shift. We find the positive intentions behind negative behaviours; create collaborative connections that directly address cycles of self-loathing and self-destruction and safely address underlying emotional pain. In this experiential workshop clinicians will learn core IFS therapy concepts; safe interventions for high-risk behaviors and steps for healing underlying trauma. Participants will leave with an innovative set of skills and a fresh perspective on people suffering with addictive processes and trauma.
