Your Course Outline

Whether you’re new to Polyvagal theory or familiar with its concepts, this course has everything you need to start seeing breakthrough results with your clients!

Course Introduction with Deb Dana, LCSW, and Tracy Jarvis, PESI UK Director
In an intimate discussion between Deb Dana and Tracy Jarvis, they dive deep into how Polyvagal theory has evolved over the years and how being a Polyvagal-Informed practitioner has revolutionised Deb’s clinic. They cover the common paths and pitfalls when using Polyvagal theory in practice, and how you can refine your approach to reap all the benefits of being a Polyvagal-Informed practitioner.

Therapy Through the Lens of the Nervous System
Before you can master Polyvagal theory, we need to start at the very beginning. Deb equips you with extremely powerful Polyvagal insights and tools, making understanding the complex nervous system a breeze. You’ll end this session with the foundational knowledge you need to confidently apply Polyvagal theory in your practice.

Co-Regulating Through the Social Engagement System
The social engagement system is vital for your clients' feelings of safety. Deb shares her favourite Polyvagal-Informed techniques and exercises she uses to influence this system, so you can guide your clients toward increased self-regulation, healing, and connection to others.

Anchoring in Ventral: Practices and Resources to Return to Regulation
Through various demonstrations and experiential exercises, Deb continues to equip you with resources to help your clients return to safety and connection. By using concepts such as glimmers, anchors, and SIFTing, you will be able to help your clients find safety and connection wherever they are. You’ll get the rare chance to watch these concepts in practice through real-life, practical examples of them in action — so you’ll know exactly how to apply them in session with your clients.

The System in Action - Shifts, Continuums and Blended States
Increasing the flexibility of your client’s nervous system is a key skill for any Polyvagal-Informed therapist. Deb emphasises the critical importance of the vagal brake for doing this and provides more practical steps you can take to hold space for your client’s nervous system and increase their autonomic self-awareness and self-regulation.

Rupture and Repair in Polyvagal-Informed Practice
When you’re working with clients, ruptures in the therapeutic relationship are inevitable. Deb outlines the common mistakes therapists run into, and how to address them in a Polyvagal-Informed manner to achieve maximum repair and reconnection with your client.

Polyvagal-Informed Tracking, Treatment Planning and Self-Care
Once you have developed your clients’ self-awareness of their autonomic state, you need to help them integrate this knowledge into their day-to-day lives. Deb shows you how to do this using proven methods to track their state and set goals for themselves. Deb also discusses the responsibilities of being a Polyvagal-Informed practitioner and using your energy to encourage healing in your clients.

Treating Trauma and Addiction with the Felt Sense Polyvagal Model
Seasoned trauma and addiction expert Jan Winhall, MSW, FOT, introduces you to her Felt Sense Polyvagal Model™ (FSPM) which combines Polyvagal theory, Gendlin’s Focusing approach to psychotherapy, and more. Through a combination of theoretical models, experiential exercises, and video demonstrations, Jan will give you the skills to use FSPM to address the interplay between trauma and addiction in your clients so that they can break the cycle and empower themselves.
